Reducing gap between turbine and mantle to improve efficiency

All kinds of challenges await the hydroelectricity industry. Risks from corrosion, erosion and wear are omnipresent. Metallitech is a key player in the industry to reduce and even avoid those problems and contribute to lengthen service life of parts.

In operation since 1999, the Chaudière Hydroelectric Power Plant produces 116 651 MWh per year. Recently, the Metallitech team was commissioned to rebuild to specifications a turbine and its housing. In order to do this, a metallic coating was applied on the whole of the Kaplan Turbine. The turbine’s five blades were reloaded by welding at the power plant.

At Metallitech, another type of coating was then applied to the interior surface of the housing. The Chaudière Plant now has enhanced coatings in its equipment to better resist corrosion, erosion and wear. Innergex now benefits from the recovery of the efficiency of its turbine, which had been diminished by wear over the years.
